For nowhere either with more quiet or more freedom from trouble does a man retire than into his own soul, particularly when he has within him such thoughts that by looking into them he is immediately in perfect tranquillity; and I affirm that tranquillity is nothing else than the good ordering of the mind.

George Long, 1862 · Meditations, IV, 3

Marco Aurélio · Meditations, VII, 28

Retire into thyself. The rational principle which rules has this nature, that it is content with itself when it does what is just, and so secures tranquillity.

George Long, 1862 · Meditations, VII, 28

Sêneca · Letter 28, §4

The person you are matters more than the place to which you go; for that reason we should not make the mind a bondsman to any one place.

Richard Mott Gummere, 1917–1925 · Letter 28, §4

Epicteto · Enchiridion, XII

For it is better to die with Hunger, exempt from Grief and Fear, than to live in Affluence with Perturbation: and it is better your Servant should be bad, than you unhappy.

Elizabeth Carter, 1758 · Enchiridion, XII
