The earliest source we can name is Gladiator (2000), film directed by Ridley Scott, screenplay by David Franzoni, John Logan and William Nicholson: a line Maximus attributes to Commodus’s father, “Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back.”; the wording was searched in the author’s editions and not found there.
