“Fire is the test of gold; adversity, of strong men.” — attributed to Seneca
In substance, yes; in this wording, no. The idea is at On Providence, V; Aubrey Stewart’s 1889 edition is quoted below, and the sentence as it circulates is not this translator’s.
In substance, yes. Stewart’s On Providence (1889), chapter V, has the sentence in another form: “Fire tries gold, misfortune tries brave men.” The version that circulates, “Fire is the test of gold; adversity, of strong men”, is a different rendering of the same line, often shared with its Latin, “Ignis aurum probat, miseria fortes viros”; those English words are not in our files as written.
The chapter is the one where Seneca has God explain why good men suffer: the workman cannot alter his materials, the man meriting careful description cannot have a straightforward course, he must go upwards and downwards, be tossed about, and make his way in spite of fortune. The line about gold concludes that paragraph, followed by: see how high virtue has to climb.
On Providence is one of the ten dialogues we hold in Stewart’s translation, and one of the six whose chapters align with Baillard’s French; the sentence stands at the same place in both. The editions are described at Sources.
