Meditations · Book X
Meditations, X, 14
Chapter 14 of Book X of the Meditations. First the passage as Stoïque shows it, after Long, 1862; then the whole chapter, word for word, in that edition, and the same chapter in French.
The passage in the app
To nature, who gives all and takes all back, the disciplined and modest man says: give what you will, take back what you will. He says it not with pride, but obediently and well pleased with her.
— MARCUS AURELIUS · MEDITATIONS, X, 14
After Long, 1862 — modernized.
On the widgets
Not every widget family holds a passage this long. The app never cuts one: where it does not fit, a shorter passage takes its place, with its reference. The circular widget carries the locator alone.
The whole chapter in Long’s 1862 edition
To her who gives and takes back all, to nature, the man who is instructed and modest says, Give what thou wilt; take back what thou wilt. And he says this not proudly, but obediently, and well pleased with her.
